Algoma Women Entrepreneurs: Kristine Ruehl of Hotel Stebbins
Mixing Tradition with a New Vision: Kristine Ruehl and the Legacy of Hotel Stebbins
From Banking to Hospitality
Nestled in the heart of Algoma, Wisconsin, Hotel Stebbins stands as a testament to resilience, reinvention, and purpose. For owner Kristine Ruehl, the journey from commercial banking to hospitality was one she never saw coming—until life redirected her path in the most unexpected way.
Following the sudden loss of her mother and best friend, Kristine found herself at a crossroads. What emerged was a bold decision made alongside her then-husband: to take on the monumental task of reviving the historic Hotel Stebbins. The goal wasn’t just to run a business—it was to build a legacy, forge meaningful relationships, and find renewed purpose.
Passion with a Purpose
“Hospitality chose me,” Ruehl reflects. “My passion for serving others made it a natural fit.” That passion has been evident over her 20 years of ownership. Beyond offering lodging and food, Hotel Stebbins has become a place where memories are made, where youth are mentored into adulthood, and where community thrives.
Kristine’s impact goes beyond hospitality—she’s also been active in short-term real estate rentals, single-family home ownership, and recently opened an intimate private chef event venue. Each venture is rooted in her mission: to create spaces where people feel valued, uplifted, and inspired.
Trials of the Trade
Kristine’s career has not been without its challenges. She has weathered major economic downturns like the 2008 recession, as well as the sweeping impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Staffing shortages, personal sacrifices, and the relentless demands of a 100+ hour work week have tested her strength.
She also notes the added complexity of being a strong female business owner. “Sticking to your gut as a strong female can be a double-edged sword,” she says. “But I’ve grown, and thankfully, the stigma is less now than ever.”
Triumphs Worth Celebrating
Despite the obstacles, Kristine has built a legacy of triumph. She has employed and mentored hundreds, helping shape young workers into responsible, capable adults. Her dedication has helped revitalize Algoma’s downtown, and Hotel Stebbins remains the longest continuously operating business in Kewaunee County.
Through simple, sincere acts of kindness, she’s made a real difference in the lives of many. “It’s about creating a ripple effect of goodness,” Kristine says, “so one lifted spirit can inspire another—and on and on.”
Algoma: A Community That Supports
Being a business owner in Algoma has been a uniquely rewarding experience. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Kristine says. “This community has lifted me up just as I’ve tried to lift up others.”
She’s watched Algoma grow, thrive, and come together to support one another—and she’s proud to be part of that ongoing story.
Words of Wisdom for Future Entrepreneurs
When asked what advice she would give to aspiring women business owners, Kristine is generous with her insight:
“Do your research. Build your plan carefully. Be an opportunist, but stay humble. Learn from those who’ve walked the path before you—and always be grateful for a helping hand.”
A Heartfelt Message
Kristine’s love for her community is unwavering. “I LOVE ALGOMA,” she says emphatically. “And I’m so thankful for the people, employees, and patrons who have supported this dream.”
Under her passionate and purposeful leadership, Hotel Stebbins continues to live up to its tagline:
“Mixing tradition with a new vision – Stebbins Style.”
