Algoma, WI (September 19, 2023) – von Stiehl Winery scores another 90-point red wine at USA Wine Ratings International Competition
von Stiehl Winery, the oldest licensed winery in Wisconsin, was just awarded six silver medals and one coveted gold medal in the annual USA Wine Ratings International Competition. This competition rates wines from all over the world from some of the most prestigious areas on a 100-point system based on Quality, Value, and Packaging. von Stiehl’s 2019 Soaring Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon brought home the 90-point Gold Medal.
“The Soaring Eagle Cabernet is an incredible showing of true artisanship from a Wisconsin Winery,” says Anthony Bilwin, General Manager at von Stiehl Winery. “From the relationships cultivated to harvesting only the best quality fruit in select AVAs on the West Coast, this cabernet is a testament to just how good wine made in Wisconsin can be.”
All the wines submitted for the competition scored 85-points or higher, including one of von Stiehl’s most award-winning wines, Riesling. But their 2022 Albariño and current vintage of Cherry Bounce really shined with both scoring 89-points. “To have a broad set of wines rated in such a tight grouping, and several so close to breaking the 90-point barrier, it just goes to show the knowledge, the pursuit of excellence, and attention to detail we take making our wines,” says Bilwin.
Other wines submitted for rating and also won medals included: Chardonnay (silver), Sierra Foothills Cabernet Sauvignon (silver), and Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (silver). These wines show the dedication to the artisan craft, and evolution of von Stiehl’s tasting guide over the years by adding traditional vinifera wines onto their already famous fruit and sweet wines.
