Algoma Visitor Center: Visitor Services & Volunteer Coordinator & Volunteer Coordinator

The Visitor Services and Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruiting and scheduling of all volunteers to staff the Algoma Visitor Center. The Volunteer Coordinator supervises the volunteers and provides direction and coordination for all volunteer functions within the Visitor’s Center with the goal to provide exemplary customer service and to enhance the visitor experience in the Algoma area.

The Visitor Services and Volunteer Coordinator is a part-time position, answering directly to the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.


Volunteer Recruitment 

  • Recruit and retain a corps of 30-40 volunteers to ensure sufficient staffing of the Visitors Center
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other volunteer organizations within the area

Volunteer Management

  • Develop training materials with the Executive Director and conduct volunteer orientation and training
  • Schedule volunteers to ensure that the Visitor Center is fully staffed during all hours of operation
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all volunteers
  • Develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service
  • Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and recommend and implement changes as needed
  • Maintain accurate visitor records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers
  • Assist in coordinating volunteer appreciation events

Visitor Center and Office Support

  • Stock and maintain visitor center brochures
  • Sell souvenirs and manage all transactions
  • Track inventory of all visitor center materials and souvenirs
  • Answer the phone, direct phone inquiries, mail
  • Assemble packets and special requests for materials
  • Perform related tasks as required


  • Relevant experience leading volunteers, and/or managing staff in a service-oriented setting
  • In-depth knowledge of the Algoma area, its history, visitor attractions, businesses, etc. and/or has demonstrated the ability to quickly become knowledgeable of the aforementioned topics
  • Basic computer proficiency expected: Microsoft Office Suite, internet use, and record keeping
  • A calm and professional demeanor when dealing with the public and/or difficult situations, and the ability to work well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers
  • Strong oral communication skills, additional languages helpful but not required
  • Flexible, able to work independently, problem-solver


Monday through Friday, $15/hr: roughly 20 hrs/week, May-Oct, 10-12 hrs/week Nov-Apr.

Weekends are only required when volunteers are unable to be scheduled.
