Ice Age Trail Mammoth Hike Challenge Kick-Off Hike in Algoma, WI

Grab your hiking boots and join the Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail on Saturday, October 5, 2024,  for a hike to kick-off the Ice Age Trail Alliance’s 2024 Mammoth Hike Challenge. The hike begins at 10:30 a.m. from the Ahnapee State Trailhead at 6th and Perry Streets in Algoma, heading to the CTH M parking lot and back (about 2.8 miles). For those up for a longer trek, there will be an option to continue as far as Blahnik Park and back (about 5.9 miles).

The 2024 Mammoth Hike Challenge encourages participants to hike 44 miles on the Ice Age Trail and visit three Ice Age Trail Communities during October.  Algoma is now one of those communities!  Think 44 miles sounds daunting? No worries! You can combine your hike with unlimited “bonus mile” activities. Participation is free, and those who complete the challenge will earn a Mammoth Hike Challenge patch and certificate.

Whether you’ve already signed up or are just considering it, this Algoma hike is a great chance to learn more about the Mammoth Hike Challenge, explore a part of the newly marked Algoma Trail, earn miles and connect with other hikers.  You will also learn how you can earn a second patch by hiking the 28-plus miles of the Ahnapee State Trail that are also the Ice Age Trail.  Led by local members of the Ice Age Trail Alliance this Algoma hike will earn you five Mammoth Hike Challenge bonus miles plus miles hiked.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath showcasing the natural beauty left behind by the last Ice Age, with forests, lakes, prairies, and glacial formations.  The Mammoth Hike Challenge is an annual event organized by the Ice Age Trail Alliance, encouraging people to explore this beautiful trail.
