  • All across the country, Youth Art Month is observed each March  and celebrates the accomplishments of young creatives.

    ArtBeet Kewaunee is proud to present its 2nd Annual Youth Art Month (YAM) celebration throughout March 2023. Please join in the celebration of the artwork created by Kewaunee County student artists. Luxemburg-Casco, Kewaunee, and Algoma High School student work will be on exhibit throughout the month of March 2023. An artists reception will be held on March 3rd, 2023 from 5-8PM in conjunction with First Friday Art in Algoma.

    March 3, 2023

    First Friday Art in Algoma YAM 2023 Edition
    Friday, March 3, 2023  5 – 8PM
    Downtown Algoma, WI

    Over 100 works from Kewaunee County’s high school aged artists will be on display in galleries and businesses throughout Algoma, WI. Come to the opening reception and meet these young artists and witness how much talent we have right here in our area.

     


     

    March 4, 2023

    Youth Art Month Monotype Workshop
    Saturday, March 4, 2023, 9AM-12PM
    Yonder, 321 Steele St. Algoma, WI

    Students, ages 8 to 18, will spend the morning in Yonder’s printmaking studio. They will be introduced to monotype printmaking and get the opportunity to create original, one of a kind prints by exploring different surfaces, painting and inking techniques. These works of art can be hand rubbed or can be run through our etching press.

    Yonder printmaker Don Krumpos will lead this class and inspire students by sharing his work as well as techniques and the importance of process in printmaking.

    $35 per student includes all necessary materials

    Pinch Pot Workshop
    Saturday, March 11, 2023, 10AM-12PM
    Clay on Steele 221 Steele St. Algoma WI
    Come learn the basics of how to make a pinch pot out of a ball of clay. No wheel needed, just your hands. Class will involve a tour of the studio, pinching out 2 pots and then glazing them with fun underglaze colors. Finished pieces will be available to pick up end of April, which allows the proper drying time for the pieces to be fired.

    Ages: 8 to 18.  Cost: $10 per person, payment due day of class and can be either cash or check.  6 people per session.

    Monster Amplifier Fast Mache/CelluClay Sculpture Class by Whimsy Cottage Art Studio
    Saturday, March 11, 2023, 11AM – 2:30PM,
    The Wildflower Supper Club, 306 Ellis St. Kewaunee, WI

    Artists Joel and Carissa Crawford of Whimsy Cottage Art Studio are excited to participate in Art Beet Kewaunee’s Youth Art Month 2023! Students, ages 13 to 18, will spend the late morning to early afternoon at The Wildflower Supper Club briefly learning about the history of how molds were and are used in the Paper Mache Arts Industry before getting their hands dirty creating their own artistically customized Monster Cell Phone Holder and Amplifier.

    They will be introduced to the use of positive and negative molds made from Plaster of Paris and Silicone to create an original, unique Monster Cell Phone Amplifier. By exploring form creation and building using Positive Molds, Texture Molds for effects, and Negative Push Molds for creating embellishments, the student will leave with their own Monster Cell Phone Amplifier (To finish painting at home with supplied materials.) and the knowledge to begin safely creating their own amazing works in their home art studio. (Or kitchen table!) The students will also learn how easy it can be to start their journey into the sculpture arts using easily accessible low-cost materials from the local hardware store, craft store, grocery store, dollar store or Amazon.

    2nd Annual Art Beat Open Mic

    Youth & Adult Shadow Puppet Class & Performance
    Saturday, March 18, 2023 9AM – 2PM and Saturday, March 25, 2023 10AM – 4PM

    Yonder is excited to offer this opportunity for collaboration and creativity as part of Art Beet Kewaunee’s Youth Art Month 2023!

    Puppeteer, Don Krumpos, will share shadow puppet history, storyboarding and process as well as technical craft. Students will create their own shadow puppet short. Creative work is encouraged outside of class time. Students will work collaboratively and perform their puppet show on March 25th at 5 pm in a public performance hosted by Yonder. All artists, students and professional artists, ages 12 and up are welcome!

    Due to space concerns this class is open to no more than 10 students.

    Public shadow puppet performance beginning at 5PM March 25, 2023.

    Workshop Price: All supplies will be provided. Yonder will order pizza on Saturday March 25th for all participants. Please bring your own snacks, lunch and beverages.

    Adults: $200
    Artists under 18: $100

    Beginners Photography Class and Workshop presented by Nick’s Lighthouse Photography

    The Bakery Bar 408 Milwaukee St.  Kewaunee, WI

    Do you want to learn a few new tips to take better cellphone photos?
    Or maybe interested in learning to using a DSLR or mirrorless camera?
    Come learn basic principals of taking good photos and learn a few new tricks.

    The first part of the class will explore techniques for creating appealing photos, then weather permitting we will head outside and take some photos downtown near The Bakery Bar or even down to the Lighthouse. Please dress appropriately.

    The class will be taught using Apple products and Canon cameras.

    Space is very limited and open to 10 people.

    Beginners Sewing Class

    Kewaunee Artisan Center  401 Harrison St. Kewaunee, WI  

    Students will learn sewing machine safety and beginner machine sewing skills. In this class the student will make a simple tote bag. The class will be 2 hours long and the student will have a finished tote bag to take home.

    Class size is limited to 10 students
    Ages: 10-18

    The materials fee is $5.00 per student .

    Comic/Zine Workshop for Students

    Yardstick Books  317 Steele St Algoma, WI

    Yardstick is excited to host Green Bay graphic artist and illustrator, Aaron Renier for a Comic Workshop. Each participant will create their own comic or traditional zine out of one folded piece of paper. All necessary materials are included.

    Aaron Renier is the author of three graphic novels for younger readers:  Spiral-BoundThe Unsinkable Walker Bean, and The Unsinkable Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon. He has illustrated several children’s books by Daniel Pinkwater, including, most recently, Kat Hats in 2022. He has received the Eisner Award for Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition and was an inaugural resident for the Sendak Fellowship. He lives in Green Bay.

    Bring your own camera, cell phone or otherwise. Then get your street gear ready for a roam around town where you will learn basic lighting and composition.

    Youth Workshop: Healing Arts
    Sunday March 26, 2023  1:30-3:30PM
    Roots Yoga and Healing 417 Steele Street, Algoma, WI

    Join Roots Yoga and Healing for this interactive youth workshop! You’ll get to explore some of the healing arts, including mindful yoga movement, breathing techniques, meditation, creating a unique journal utilizing therapeutic techniques, and authentic expressions reflecting on the emotions we experience. This workshop will be led by Tanya Kavicky-Mels of Soul Glue Therapy, special guest artist Debby Ulrich, and Jamie Schmiling of Roots Yoga and Healing. Designed for ages 10 and up. Parental consent must be signed prior to class start time.
