Employment: Algoma Visitor Services and Volunteer Coordinator

The Visitor Services & Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting and scheduling all volunteers to staff the Visitor Center. The Volunteer Coordinator supervises volunteers and provides direction and coordination for all volunteer functions within the Visitor Center to provide exemplary customer service and enhance the visitor experience in the Algoma area.

The Visitor Services & Volunteer Coordinator is a part-time position, answering directly to the Chamber’s Executive Director.

Volunteer Recruitment

  • Recruit and retain a corps of 30-40 volunteers to ensure sufficient staffing for Visitor Center
  •  Develop and maintain relationships with other volunteer organizations within the area

Volunteer Management

  • Develop training materials with the Executive Director, conduct volunteer orientation and training
  • Schedule volunteers to ensure that the Visitor Center is fully staffed during all hours of operation
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers
  • Develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service
  • Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend and implement changes as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers

Visitor Center and Office Support

  • Stock and maintain visitor center brochures
  • Sell souvenirs and manage small cash transactions
  • Coordinate ongoing list of hotel vacancies
  • Answer the phone, directs phone inquiries and mail
  • Serve as receptionist and greeter for guests arriving for meetings or individual appointments
  • Assemble packets and special requests for materials
  • Perform related tasks as required.


  • Relevant experience leading volunteers, and/or managing staff in a service-oriented setting
  • In-depth knowledge of the Algoma area, and its history, visitor attractions, and businesses, or demonstrated experience quickly coming up to speed on such information

Desired but not expected:

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite, internet use, and record keeping
  • A calm and professional demeanor when dealing with the public and/or with difficult situations, and the ability to work well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers
  • Strong oral communication skills, additional languages helpful but not required
  • Flexible, able to work independently, problem-solver

M-F: Not to exceed 20 hours May-October, not to exceed 10 hours November-April
Weekends only required when volunteers are unable to be scheduled.
