Algoma is open for business!
A little construction dust won’t stop our businesses from serving you! This summer visitors to Algoma can expect small traffic reroutes as they head to their favorite places in Algoma to shop, dine, stay and play. Our second street bridge is being replaced, with a completion date of November 2019. Please find all construction updates below, and a clickable handy map with access routes on this page.
2019 2nd Street Bridge Replacement and Road Construction Information
Some long overdue road improvements are scheduled to take place in Algoma in 2019. To be sure all affected parties are informed we are working with the City of Algoma Public Works, Algoma Utilities, Kewaunee County Highway Department and the Wisconsin DOT to push out information regarding road and business access during this time. There will still be access to businesses in the region of closure. Thank you to everyone for your patience during these much needed upgrades. We look forward to the improvements!

October 22, 2019
The 2nd Street Bridge in Algoma will now be looking at a December 7, 2019 opening.
Curbs and gutters will be installed on 1st Street and 2nd Street in the next week with sidewalk completion and the blacktopping of the street to follow. Plans are for the streets to reopen to the public by the evening of October 29, 2019.
September 27, 2019 Update
The waterway under the bridge is now scheduled for closure on Sunday, October 6, 2019.
September 4, 2019 Update
Due to the high water levels, once the falsework for the new bridge is put up there will only be approximately 3-4 feet of clearance under the 2nd Street bridge.
Beginning on Monday, September 16, 2019, boats will no longer be able to pass under the 2nd Street bridge. This closure will last until the bridge is back open which is scheduled for the 1st week in November. Boats on the west side of the bridge need to be moved to the east side of the bridge prior to the closure or boats will need to be removed from the water at the Olson Park site.
August 30, 2019 Update
On September 3, 2019, Peters Concrete will begin construction in the intersection of 2nd Street and Navarino Street. Construction will take place from that intersection working south to Steele Street. During the day, there will be no parking on 2nd Street between Steele and Navarino Streets. See 2nd St. Construction & Parking Restriction map on this page.
Work on 1st Street will begin after Wet Whistle Wine Fest which takes place on September 13 and 14, 2019.
Please drive carefully around the construction areas.
Please note, after Tuesday, September 3, 2019, there will be height restrictions for clearance under the bridge.

Detour signs will be placed the week before the project starts.
- The official detour will be HWY 42 (4th Street).
- Those wishing to get back to HWY S will be routed to HWY J.
- Residents may still use N. Water Street or other routes to gain access to HWY S. Note: No Parking on N. Water Street between 2nd and 4th.
- N. Water St. may be closed a few days while a water line is being worked on.
The Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce will do its best to keep this page current with any updates regarding the progress of the project along with changes and road closures.
The contractor is required to communicate critical changes to the public. Interested parties can contact City of Algoma 920-487-5203 to be put on an email list.
Ahnapee River Access
The Ahnapee River may not be accessible to larger boats and will be closed for the following activities:
- Form work, 1 day
- Install deck, 1 day
- Remove form work, 1 day
River will be open Thursdays-Sundays during the project as well as during K/D tournament July 20-28, 2019.
Boaters are cautioned to look for low hanging netting currently on bridge which is required for bird management.
The river will not be closed during deconstruction phase. The south side under the bridge should remain open with minor closures due to daily movement of equipment. Construction crews will be responsive to those needing to get through if a block occurs. If you are blocked, please give a whistle on your horn and be patient as crews accommodate your needs.
Work will begin at 7 each morning and end time varies daily (anticipated 5-6pm). No weekend work is scheduled at this point but may be included.
After Labor Day, the bridge will only have a four-foot clearance. Kayaks and canoes wishing to still go under bridge are urged to use extreme caution as it is a live construction site.
Charter operators that are up the Ahnapee River should contact City Marina at (920) 487-2232 for assistance with accommodations during closures.
